It was established in 1st July 1968 and nationalized in 1983. After the independence in 1972, the college was renamed as Shahid Bulbul College from Islamia College after the name of Shamsul Alam Bulbul, the then student of this College, who laid down his life in Libaration war. It is a well known College of Rajshahi division because of its historical background and remarkable results in HSC level. It started with only 165 students while there is now 7500 students. There are Honours and Degree level as well as Higher Secondary level. With a good academic atmosphere and a group of efficient and experienced teachers, this College has occupied a good position in Rajshahi Division.
