THAKURGAON GOVT. COLLEGE - 3502

THAKURGAON SADAR, THAKURGAON., SADAR ,THAKURGAON - 5100

Thakurgaon Govt. College : Its Past and Present Thakurgaon Govt. College is the highest educational institution in the district of Thakurgaon. Established in 1959 and nationalised in 1980, this huge abode of education provides facilities of learning for the students of Higher Secondary, Degree (Pass) and 14 Honours Courses. Its 33-acre campus faces the river Tangon on the south, the remotest Everest on the north, Thakurgaon Railway Station on the west and the famous Old Bus-stand on the east. Geographically blessed and politically uninterrupted, this college has become a wholesome academic area for about ten thousand students to help them aquire knowledge, skill and ability for becoming benevolent citizens of Bangladesh. To get to this admiring status, Thakurgaon Govt. College has had to cross more than half of the last century, overcoming various oddities and obstacles. The task of initiating the job of establishing a college here was at the beginning a very difficult and troublesome thing for the great founders. But they took every pain to realise their dream of having a college in their locality for their children. Those entrepreneurs of education met on a meeting of Sub-division Social Development Fund Committee on June 08, 1959. A glorious decision was taken then that a college would be established at Thakurgaon. Mr. M. I. K. Khalil, the then Sub-divisional Officer of Thakurgaon was selected the Chairman of the Ad hoc Committee formed for this purpose. This Committee began their journey that day with a commitment of offering their all out efforts to establish this college by the session 1959-60. And truly they succeeded. They ultimately were able to set up Thakurgaon College in the premises of Thakurgaon High School with as many as 50 students in the groups of Arts and Commerce in the session they tried for. A great lover of learning and the Headmaster of Thakurgaon High School, Mr. Rustom Ali Khan T. K. was temporarily recruited as the Principal for the new college. Soon people from all the walks of life began to invest their money, time and efforts to this college. They included local political leaders, educationists, lawyers, doctors, businessmen, and social workers of every sort. Among them these great people like Mr. Nurol Haque Chowdhury (once MNA and Parliamentary Secretary), Mr. Mirza Ruhul Amin (once Member of the Provincial Assembly, and then Member of the Parliament and Minister), Mr. Keramat Ali, Mr. Rezwanul Haque (Idu Chowdhury) (Ex-member of the Parliament and Minister), Late Omor Ali, Late C. M. Ismail, Late Abdul Ali Advocate, Mr. Fazlul Karim (Ex-member of the Parliament), Dr. A. T. M. Yusuf, Dr. Hurmat Ali Chowdhury, Mr. Khorshed Ali, Mr. Shahadat Ali, Late Gomir Uddin Prodhan (once the Deputy Speaker of the Provincial Assembly), Late Abu Mozaffor-Ibn-Zahid, Md. Yusuf, Dr. Abdul Aziz (Panchgarh), Mr. Advocate Abdur Rouf must be mentioned here. Thakurgaon College opened Higher Secondary Science group in 1962. At the same year here Degree (Pass) course was opened with Arts and Commerce groups. Science group was added to Degree classes in 1969. After that passed as many as 27 years when in the session 1997-98 our National University allowed us to open honours courses in Economics, Accounting, Mathematics and Political Science to give this college the status of an Honours College. The path of glory thus was heightened, and never fell. Next year (session: 1998-99) our another Great Son of Thakurgaon, Honourable Minister of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, Mr. Ramesh Chandra Sen, MP helped to open honours courses in other six subjects like Botany, English, Management, Bangla, Zoology and Islamic History & Culture. Now in the session 2010-11 the college has honours courses in Philosophy and History. Then soon it has introduced honours courses in Physics and Chemistry in the session 2011-12. Now the college is complete with honours courses in all of its 14 subjects. The college was nationalised on March 01, 1980 with the newest name ‘Thakurgaon Government College’. Mr. Md. Abdul Mazid was the first Principal of newly nationalised Thakurgaon College. Today Professor Dr. Md. Golam Kibria Mondal is the Honourable Principal of this college. After finishing a long tour in the realm of knowledge, skill and administrative services in various renowned Universities and colleges of the country, he has now taken over the rudder of this traditional college to take it further away on the highlands of masters courses in different subjects so that people here and around this locality can get a complete home of learning for their children which was the original dream of our ancestors. So, this famous Principal has been working day and night since his joining on 23rd April 2011. He has been a kind guardian of thousands of ever growing students, a careful well wisher for his colleagues, and a robust reformer for the country herself.
